Sean Gallagher
We were very privileged to welcome Sean Gallagher, master physical therapist and Pilates teacher trainer, to the 2015 PAA conference in Sydney. Among his many informative and insightful workshops, Sean provided an excellent overview of the influences that may have shaped Joseph Pilates’ inventions and method in his History of Exercise lecture. And in his Archival Presentation, Sean also gave a thoroughly enjoyable historical overview of the archives and influence on Joseph Pilates’ life and work.
During his time in Australia, Sean was also interviewed on ABC Radio. The interview is a great promotion of both the Pilates industry and the PAA. A link to the interview is provided below.
Throughout the interview, Sean provides a brief and accurate history of the Method and how it works. He also discusses the key similarities and differences between Pilates and Yoga, explaining that although Pilates was influenced by Yoga and both disciplines mimic developmental positions in their ‘poses’ and exercises, the unique apparatus that Joe invented, created two fundamental differences:
- By providing resistance, and
- By challenging balance
These factors are what allow the Pilates Method to stimulate the muscular structure and the nervous system, carving new patterns of movement and thought.
There are some real gems of information in this interview that will allow us all to further understand, appreciate and promote this wonderful body of work to our clients and the wider community.
Enjoy!
