POSTURAL ASSESSMENT by JANE JOHNSON
ISBN – 13: 978-1-4504-0096-1

HUMAN KINETICS

Postural Assessment is part of the series hands-on guides for therapists, published by Human Kinetics. The author is UK Physiotherapist/Sports Massage Therapist Jane Johnson. A member of the Institute of Anatomical Sciences, Jane also acts as an educator for the Federation of Holistic Therapies.

This easy to read illustrated guide runs through the theory behind posture, considers all aspects of a postural assessment, breaks down the components of assessment and even offers a list of equipment required. There are clear diagrams and explanations on the anatomically correct standing posture from the three angles to use as a base line, but reiterates that everyone can have individual variants rather than flaws.

A combination of theory, well presented photographs and diagrams outlining assessment from anterior, posterior and lateral angles. In addition it provides a seated assessment as a guide for those clients who cannot remain standing for a prolonged period, and also describes common postures adopted by sedentary lifestyles. I found this very interesting and helpful.

Each segment runs through a methodical approach to assessment, offering wording, diagrams on angles and measurements, photographic evidence of common faults observed and methods of recording. It looks at anatomical structure, boney alignment, muscular imbalance and provides clinical reasoning behind common faults seen. The segments finish with a question and answer section to help the reader consolidate the theory.

I think this comprehensive guide is well worth its place on the bookshelf of all therapists, whether they come from a background of in depth anatomical and biomechanical assessment, or those with a more broadened approach. The layout of illustrations, plus the little tips on common responses one may get from their clients, to the reproducible assessment templates will be of assistance in any clinical environment.
