Recent research has provided support for Pilates providing health benefits for the general population. Exercise confers numerous health benefits during pregnancy and Pilates has become an increasingly popular form of exercise for pregnant women. However, evidence on Pilates practice during pregnancy and the benefits for childbearing women and their babies remains limited.
This study aims to investigate the current Pilates Method programs offered throughout Australia and to explore healthcare professionals’ perspectives on the provision of Pilates exercise to pregnant women. We are conducting this research to elucidate clinicians’ perspectives on the structure of pregnancy Pilates programs, considerations for best practice, and the benefits of Pilates for pregnant women and babies.
Pilates instructors are in a unique position to observe the physical, mental and emotional benefits of Pilates for the expectant mother. Participation in this study involves completing a survey, which will take less than 30 minutes and survey responses will remain anonymous. We are hopeful that the information acquired from this study may improve our knowledge of Pilates during pregnancy throughout Australia.
We invite Pilates instructors and clinical managers of Pilates studios that currently provide Pilates to pregnant women to participate in this study
