1. What originally motivated you to try Pilates and then go on to train as an instructor?
When I turned 50 I noticed rolls of fat on my back that hadn’t been there before. That same day a very fit guy walked by my house advertising “stretch” classes. Sounded good to me so I went along and it turned out to be Pilates. From the first class I thought it was the best form of exercise ever, and I had to learn to teach it. That was 22 years ago.
2. What did you eat for breakfast?
Always granola and yoghurt, with either blueberries, papaya, strawberries or pineapple, and a cup of cinnamon-orange tea.
3. In one word describe your first Pilates experience?
Enlightening.
4. What’s the best thing about your job?
Too many to pick just one – the opportunity to travel the world to teach and learn, becoming an integral part of clients lives and watching them thrive, and helping fledgling Pilates teachers discover the joys of their chosen profession.
5. My “go to” website for all things Pilates (other than PAA)
Pilates Anytime, for inspiration, to keep myself fit and my classes fresh, and to learn from the best instructors in the world.
6. The best advice you’ve ever had?
Teach what you know, and make sure the client has a positive movement experience every class.
7. An indulgence you can’t live with out?
Going to Maui every year when I can afford it, and eating dark chocolate when I can’t.
8. How long have you been a member of PAA and how did you hear about PAA?
I heard about PAA when I started training with PilatesITC, and have been a member since 2004.
9. Do you have a motto?
Yes – “Be happy. If you’re not happy, make changes.”
10. What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Finding the time to run my studio, develop and teach workshops, learn new things, and balance that with family life, walking on the beach and creating art.
11. How do you use the PAA?
I am a member so clients know they are getting a highly qualified teacher. I use the website to find other teachers for clients who are moving or traveling, and for advertising my workshops. I enjoy reading the articles.
12. Who is your Pilates idol or would love to meet, and why?
I have been lucky enough to learn from most of the elders and many of the best Pilates teachers in the world. Right now if I could spend time with just one it would be Teresa Maldonado Marchok from California. She has the ability to make Pilates fun while also distilling the information she provides in a practical and clear way.
13. What do you appreciate most about your body?
I appreciate that my body has the energy, strength, flexibility and resilience to keep up with an active lifestyle and curious brain.
14. The book you are currently reading?
I am reading “Honolulu” by Alan Brennert. Hawaii is my home away from home and this book brings to life Hawaii from 1914 through the eyes of a Korean “picture bride”.
