What originally motivated you to try Pilates and then go on to train as an instructor?
I first did clinical Pilates with a physiotherapist when an old shoulder injury and SIJ issues worsened. Later on, I started at Reformer Pilates Heathmont and I’ve been there ever since.
During lockdown last year I did a lot of matwork classes online and my teacher, Lee encouraged me to become a teacher. I had always loved Pilates, and I felt ready for a challenge, so I enrolled!
What did you eat for breakfast?
Gluten free weetbix, milk, natural yoghurt and mango
Describe your first Pilates teaching/ apprentice teaching experience?
During placement with Lee, I thought I was going to teach Warm Up and Leg & Footwork for a reformer class, but I ended up teaching the whole class!
What impact has the recent COVID-19 virus had on your world?
I’ve become more adaptable, brave and got “out of my rut”. I value quality time with family more now.
How have you handled your Pilates training with COVID-19?
Getting back to study was a big change, definitely harder now that I’m a mother. Planning and prioritising my time was really important. I was able to link up with fellow students online and in person to practice and discuss throughout the course.
What was the most unexpected part of your training?
The first time I did Hanging Back on the Cadillac. I thought I’d fall off, but I didn’t. My body surprised me!
Your ‘go to’ website for all things Pilates (other than PAA)?
The best advice you’ve ever had?
Always tell the truth.
An indulgence you can’t live without?
Cadbury Twirl!
How long have you been a member of PAA and how did you hear about PAA?
Since December last year when I was a student. I heard about PAA through my teacher.
Do you have a motto?
If you’re going to do something, do it right.
What’s the most challenging part about learning to teach?
Finding a way to explain the exercises clearly and concisely.
How do you use PAA?
Membership, insurance and CPD.
Who is your Pilates idol or would love to meet, and why?
Well, I can’t meet Joseph Pilates (without time travel). So I would love to meet Mariska Breland. She is so creative, funny and real in her teaching. She is honest about her body and the difficulties she faces, and she creates brilliant classes that are outside the box.
What do you appreciate most about your body?
Even though it’s not perfect, it does everything I need, and surprises me sometimes.
The book you’re currently reading?
Move! The New Science of Body Over Mind by Caroline Williams.
