Book Review: Beyond the Break

Christo Hall runs a successful global Marketing business while enjoying a healthy work-life balance, working globally, but with daily time out for surfing.  In his book ‘Beyond the Break’ he takes you through his surfing life from a 16-year-old kid from the Northern Beaches’ enjoying youthful experiences in Hawaii, to a fully sponsored successful professional surfing athlete staying in luxury accommodation in Japan with a personal guide.  But it’s not all glory, and he discusses his challenges and failures along the way, including a deeply personal insight into his depression while transitioning from professional surfing into marketing.

Each chapter focuses on a surfing experience, concluding with a self-reflective piece providing ‘Lessons from the ocean’ and a translation of these learnings into tips for life and business which are discussed in ‘Carve your path’.

Christo writes with clarity and passion, and this book is a good read for surfers and non-surfers alike.  He makes you understand the deep connection experienced by surfers with the ocean, and the addiction to the adrenaline-charged rush from surfing.  His tips for personal and business success are drawn from the characteristics that win surf competition including aligning goals with purpose and strategic focus.  This is epitomised in the words from his brother about winning surf competitions: ‘You only need 2 good waves’.

As you read this book, you will discover tips on how to overcome self-doubt and failure, while learning about your limits and how to push yourself out of your comfort zone for personal and professional growth.

As a Pilates instructor, the self-refection pieces are useful for mindfulness sessions.  There are valuable tips on delivering a winning performance, and his shared self-doubt experiences may assist in overcoming any insecurities you may have as a Pilates instructor.  For the Pilates business owner, this book is filled with tips for successful business growth and development drawn from Christo’s personal and business experience. Akin to the philosophies of Joseph Pilates, Christo advocates for a healthy mind and body, but also includes a third dimension – business success.
