We have now all been notified that as of 1st June 2017, BUPA will be making changes to their Living Well package and will not be issuing any further provider numbers to Pilates instructors. This is not stopping clients seeing us, nor are BUPA discouraging Pilates as a form of recognised wellness, however, they will no longer be covering Pilates under their insurance. Our Systems Officer Kerry Haywood has liaised with BUPA and we have been provided with a contact to continue discussions with.
At this point, we have not felt a follow on effect from the other insurance companies.
This has now heightened our need for seeking regulation for Pilates as a profession under Government Authorities. This process was indeed started by my predecessors, though Pilates is not considered a high safety risk vocation such as mining or defence and therefore is taking time to work through regulation.
An affiliated subcommittee of the PAA is beginning targeted work on the task of regulation of the Pilates profession and I will keep you updated of progress at each quarter.
In the meantime, strength comes from the members, the clients of BUPA. Any BUPA client may register their concerns via their BUPA Login. If the members are heard, then BUPA Executive may instigate change.
