Complete Guide to Foam Rolling
First thoughts might be that you are about to read a book offering a foam roller exercise program that includes release techniques. However, this book is much more about understanding and learning correct technique to assist with myofascial release. Not only does it cover techniques utilising various rollers but also massage balls.
It was great to see that this book combines scientific research and systematic instructions for effective foam rolling. It is based on using these techniques for muscle preparation and recovery, very useful in a Pilates environment where rollers and massage balls are often utilised.
There is a quote that states ‘Foam rolling has the potential to work similarly to myofascial release, but often foam rolling does not create myofascial release due to improper use’ – page 8. This caught my attention, as I am sure you will agree that many of our clients are used to grabbing a foam roller upon entering the studio and simply rolling around the floor!!
I was impressed by how easy this book is to read and understand, and it really does give some great tips on how to help our clients understand how they can benefit from using the rollers correctly. There are plenty of anatomy references without becoming too technical.
If you are interested in understanding more about myofascial release this book is a great resource and easy to read and I would recommend it. The author, Kyle Stull, covers all areas of the body and has well researched explanations on how best to work with each area. However, if you are looking for variations on how to use the foam roller this book does not go into exercise selection.
