Rael Isacowitz has published the follow up edition to his 2006 book, Pilates. This 2014 edition is published in a similar landscape design, but with a slightly stronger and cleaner format.
Rael again dedicates this book to his wife and son, but also to all of his students around the world.
The forward is by Kathy Grant and the main chapters on repertoire for Mat, Cadillac, Reformer, Wunda Chair, Barrels, Pedapul, Arm Chair and Magic Circle remain unchanged, with the theory sections being replicated. The literature has maintained the depth and excellent resource material of the first edition and so did not require any updating for this second edition.
Rael wrote the first edition Pilates after 16 years of teaching, practicing and self-mastery, as well as spending an additional three years documenting his subject. Since the 2006 edition he reports that he felt further the 8 years of research and self-mastery enabled him to perfect this latest edition. Rael’s book is written in conjunction with Karen Clippenger’s Pilates Anatomy, which is also published by Human Kinetics.
The second edition includes a larger number of variations to make the exercises more accessible to a broader community. It provides material for the novice, the teacher and veterans, providing relevant progressions and regressions. The explanations are slightly more detailed and each exercise outlines the key muscle groups, the main objectives, suggest resistance, address breathing and include imagery cues. Rael used the BASI Block System to provide teachers with program planning.
The book concludes with fundamental programs for beginners, intermediate and advanced participants on both the mat and studio apparatus.
Thank you Human Kinetics Australia New Zealand for donating this second edition to the PAA for review.
