New Research added to Pilates Science website

The Pilates Science website managed by the PAA has recently been updated with new research. The following are two of the studies added:

Survey of the Effects of Exercise on Menstrual Pain Between Younger and Older Pre-menopausal Females

A large survey conducted on premenopausal females who experience menstrual pain has been further analysed to see if exercise impacts pain levels. The data was divided into two, looking at women under 30 and those 30 and older.

“Based on percentages, 38% of younger and 33.3% of older women reported pain improved, while 32.6% and 38.6% reported worsening or no change with exercise, respectively.”

25.5% in both groups reported that low-intensity aerobic and yoga/Pilates led to pain improvement, followed by strength/resistance training (20%) and moderate-intensity aerobic (18.2%).

Effect of Pilates exercises on balance and gross motor coordination in children with Down syndrome

This study gave 40 children with Down Syndrome a group of designed physical therapy exercises to help with balance and co-ordination. Half of the group were given extra Pilates exercises.

Whilst all children improved on the measures of balance, co-ordination and quality of life, the group who did the Pilates exercises showed even greater improvement.
