What originally motivated you to try Pilates and then go on to train as an instructor?
Over the decades of directing my independent theatrical production company, Marguerite Pepper Productions, I continued to sustain my own personal physical practise. This was a way of maintaining a life balance away from the intensity of producing artists, companies and events nationally and internationally. I taught for Les Mills World of Fitness for 13 years and, in my mid 40’s, decided to seek a less impactful exercise regime. This led me to yoga and finally to Extend Barre. It was Extend Barre that motivated me to want to understand more about Pilates, the foundation and the technique. So the journey began … my Pilates Studio Instructor encouraged me to consider training and I have now transitioned from my career as an arts producer to a that of Pilates Instructor as my principal profession.
What did you eat for breakfast?
Porridge, oat milk, yoghurt and season fruit from the garden
In one word, describe your first Pilates experience?
Transformative
What impact has the recent COVID-19 virus had on your world?
The Studio was closed for three months. This was impactful for us as Instructors but equally so for our clients. We initiated daily online mat classes on a “pay as you can” basis and these were fully subscribed. Being quarantined at home, this was a great opportunity to spend quality research time, as well as learning and refining the technique of online teaching.
How have you handled your Pilates teaching with COVID-19, any advice to other teachers?
Sublime Pilates has adhered to all Government directives and advice in order that the Studio can operate in a controlled and safe way. Our clients are well rehearsed in sanitising hands, wiping down equipment and staying home if they are at all unwell. They respect the Studio and their client colleagues and are diligent in not wanting to bring COVID into our community. Studio owner Tahmour Bloomfield has purchased an air filter that operates all day when the windows cannot be opened due to cold and rain. This regime has been successful. We are considerate and caring when planning classes for those who have experienced COVID, assisting their recovery process focussed on breathing and re-energisation.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I have to say “learning” as one works with clients across all age ranges, with diverse and sometimes complex pathologies. The highlight of my week, however, are the now over-subscribed classes which I have named “Mature Mat-ters”. These are Mat classes designed for the over 60’s. I began training at age 63 and recognised that there was minimal focus in training and application when working with elders. I committed to making this a focus in my teaching practise and these classes are so rewarding and fulfilling. Generally across the whole client base I feel blessed to be able to share my knowledge and offer a window to what I call “Mind Body Control”, observing the growth in understanding through movement that Pilates offers and experiencing the results.
Your ‘go to’ website for all things Pilates (other than PAA)?
The best advice you’ve ever had?
I shall defer to Mr Pilates “If your spine is inflexibly stiff @ 30 you are old; if it is completely flexible @ 60, you are young”
An indulgence you can’t live without?
Morning coffee and breakfast in bed with my partner
How long have you been a member of PAA and how did you hear about PAA?
Four years – I joined as part of my Pilates ITC training requirements.
Do you have a motto?
Mind Body Control
What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?
Understanding individual personalities and pathologies, knowing when to refer to our network of allied health experts, and feeling confident to deliver the Pilates Method to gain the greatest benefit. Every day in the Studio is a challenge for me as I want our clients to have the best possible experience and for us to learn together.
How do you use PAA?
As a respected industry body that offers support and knowledge.
Who is your Pilates idol or would love to meet, and why?
Joseph Pilates. Why? To discuss with him all of the changes and adaptations to his original repertoire, and to better understand the philosophy behind his teachings.
What do you appreciate most about your body?
The ageing process and how Pilates has assisted me with the reorganisation of my strengths and weaknesses, the awareness of my abilities and how I translate these learnings, particularly to my older clients.
The book you’re currently reading?
Shaun Bythell, Remainders of the Day
